The CMYK colour model, referred to as process colour or four colour, is a subtractive colour model, used in colour printing, also used to describe the printing process itself. CMYK refers to the four inks used in most colour printing: cyan, magenta, yellow, and key black. Though it varies by print house, press operator, press manufacturer and press run, ink is typically applied in the order of the abbreviation. We can not give guarantee of colour matching to your product (include re-print) at all. There will be £10 charge for colour match service. Coloured paper (printing)
We do not provide printing on coloured paper. However, should you want a coloured background; it is possible to create this as a colour in the file.

Indoor paper
This is poster paper which is printed using an oil-based ink. The print has a limited resistance to UV light and limited weather resistance.

The grain of the paper
For technical production reasons, we unfortunately cannot take into consideration the grain of the paper when placing your order. We therefore cannot always rule out the possibility, under certain circumstances, of slight opening when sheets are folded. Opening can be prevented by scoring papers weighing on or over 170gsm.

Scoring and grooving
This is the impression of a linear indentation in paper, cardboard or board using scoring lines or scoring rollers. The material is just displaced and compressed. Scoring prevents the material splitting or breaking when doubled or folded. Please be aware: the grain of the paper cannot be taken into consideration when producing folded goods and also cannot hold responsibility for crack after scored product.

Maximum paper formats

PDF - the Portable-Document-Format is a cross-platform file format for printable documents, which was developed by the company Adobe Systems. TIFF (Tagged-Image-File-Format) is a file format for saving image data. Together with Encapsulated Postscript, it is the most important format for the exchange of data in the pre-press phase. EPS - an Encapsulated-Postscript file, is a graphic file in the PostScript page description language, which meets the particular requirements needed to allow binding of a document.

Data / Artwork transmission
Please select between e-mail and upload.
For e-mail, send your files, stating the order number (you will receive this in your order confirmation by e-mail) to: info@creativeprinter.co.uk . You will be charged £5 for email data transmission. For upload, you can upload your print data directly. It is free.Special parallel fold is when the product is folded once in the middle. It is then processed again in a Special parallel fold. We can provide a z-fold of up to 12 pages; over 12 pages, leaflets are processed using a Special parallel fold.
Please create a 3 mm Bleed (6 mm in the case of posters) on each side in addition to the trimmed size. Important information (such as e-mail addresses, telephone number etc.) should be placed with a spacing of at least 3mm from the edge (5mm in the case of posters and 7mm in the case of magazines). In the case of punched flyers, please allow 3 mm bleed. Create your data format so that it fits our standard data format.

Labelling data

Data

Bleed

For upload, you can upload your print data directly. It is free. Both email or upload, you can upload single PDF file with multiple files or single pdf, jpg or tiff file per side. If you require same artwork to be printed both side, you require to upload twice.

Layers
Before delivering your data please delete all channels apart from CMYK and then reduce all layers to one common layer.

Colour mode
Please always supply your print data in CMYK mode. Colours created in RGB mode are generally never the same as colours created in CMYK mode. Colour saturation should not exceed 240% in total, otherwise this will result in faulty print products. 100% Black (K), 40% Cyan (C) and 40% Magenta (M) is sufficient for a deep black. Colour saturation should be at least 15%.

Do not create any decorative or special colours for any 4-colour products. This will inevitably lead to misinterpretation in the coloration. Please only use process colours in your documents. If special colours are used, we would ask you to always replace these with the appropriate CMYK value.

Please be aware that a colour on your screen or on your printout from an ink-jet printer will look slightly different to the finished print product. A computer screen shows colours using the RGB System; an offset printer uses CMYK. Both colour systems are very sophisticated but not every conceivable colour is shown exactly the same in both systems. This is why your data should be created in CMYK mode in image processing programs in order to be suitable for printing. We can not give guarantee of colour matching to your product (including re-print) at all. There will be £10 charge for colour match service. Should you require colour matching, please send us a hard copy, let's see if we can match colour.

Use of colour
Please do not use heavy ink coverage on light paper or on urgent order such as sameday or super sameday. It is also recommended that for urgent order such as sameday or super sameday, do not use heavy pigment based ink like four colour black, blue, purple and red. As these colours don't get dry for a long time.

Magazine data
Magazine with saddle stitching: e.g. A4 12 pages. We need to receive 12 A4 files, i.e. the data must always be created as single page: this Be spiel shows you the layout of a 12 page Magazine during ordering, trimmed size: 297 mm x 210 mm, data format: 303 mm x 216 mm. Important lettering, graphics and information should be placed at least 7mm inside the trimmed size. You can also upload single pdf file with all the 12 A4 files contains.

Register marks
In multi-coloured products, the register marks guarantee that individual colours are overprinted accurately.

PDF
PDF files (to PDF/X1-a 2001 ):

# A PDF file must be compatible with the ISO PDF/X1-a 2001 standard.

# Always save the PDF as PDF-Version 1.3 and compatible with Acrobat 4.0.

# All fonts, images and colour profiles must be embedded and created out lined.

# Only printable elements are permitted, which means no comments, form fields, buttons or videos.

# PDF files that contain OPI links and password protected cannot be printed.

# Permitted colour spaces are CMYK and grey levels. The ICC-based colour spaces CalRGB, CalGray and Lab may only be used in association with an ICC-Profile.

# Avoid N-Channel (colour separation).

# Transfer functions (gradation curves) are not possible.

# Please do not supply Photoshop-PDFs. Always create a JPG/JPEG or TIF/TIFF file from Photoshop.

# The data in your generated PDF file must be created centrally otherwise there may be a misalignment in the document.

# Do not secure PDF files using passwords.

Read me files
Please do not send "Read-me" files with the print data.

Cut marks
These are fine lines that show the book-binder where the sheets need cutting.

Lettering / Character sets
In the case of vector graphics, all texts must be converted into paths. Please always supply your print data in CMYK mode. Colours created in RGB mode are generally never the same as colours created in CMYK mode. Colour saturation should never exceed 240% in total, otherwise this will result in faulty print products. For a deep black, use only 100% Black (K) is sufficient.

Creating black
The best result is with 100% Black (CMYK 0/0/0/100). For a deep black, 100% Black (K), 40% Cyan (C) and 40% Magenta (M) is sufficient.

Verification of your print data
Select Verification of your print data and creativeprinter.co.uk team will check the data received against the required standards such as trim, format and resolution. Only in this way can creativeprinter.co.uk team assure you of an outstanding print format. We do not make any guarantees regarding spelling mistakes, printer's errors or misplaced graphics.

Key Printing Terms / Technology

Print types
We carry out Offset / litho and digital printing.

CMYK: The four printing colours cyan, magenta, yellow and black. All required secondary colours can be obtained from the first three primary colours. Black enhances contrast and is applied separately.

Computer to Plate (CtP): Procedure for producing printing plates directly from digital data. This technology is inexpensive, since no lithography stage is required.

Desktop Publishing (DTP): Text and image processing on the computer using a scanner and a laser printer as the output medium. The rapid developments in computer technology mean that DTP is becoming increasingly popular.

Direct Capture Technology (DCT): Scanner technology for recording image information directly without need for deflection using mirrors. This avoids stray light and distortions. It also improves image quality quite significantly.

Digital printing: Unlike conventional printing processes, digital printing does not require extensive preparation time. Digital data can be used to produce direct, high-quality printing. Digital printing is ideal for small runs.

Gravure printing: Unlike letterpress printing, the areas to be printed - known as cells - are recessed in gravure printing technology. These cells are either etched or engraved onto the printing forms. The ink is pressed into the cells by means of a roller. Excess ink is wiped away and the image transferred to the paper by means of back pressure. Gravure printing is used for runs in excess of one million prints.

Job Definition Format (JDF): New data format for exchanging information in the graphic arts industry. It supports complete, manufacturer-independent integration of all job-related and computer-based processes. JDF is Internet-compatible.

Lamination: We carry out gloss lamination on UV or flim depending on service availability on production and urgency of job. If customers need any particular type of lamination they have to let us know. We will try to keep your request if possible.

Matt lamination is always done on flim.

Layout: The position of the texts and images on a page is defined in the layout and so forms the template for the print product.

Letterpress printing: In letterpress printing, all printing areas are elevated over the non-printing areas. The image information is transferred by inking up the areas to be printed.

Linotype: Keyboard-operated metal composing machine which sets type in a metal strip as long as a line, as opposed to single character.

Lithographic printing: See Offset printing.

Offset / lithographic printing: Offset printing is based on the principle that grease and water repel each other. The areas to be printed and those which are not to be printed lie on virtually the same level. The elements to be printed attract the ink and repel water; the situation is reversed for non-printing elements.

Print Production Workflow: Generic term for the workflow for producing print products. This is conventionally broken down into prepress, press and postpress/finishing.

Printing on Demand: Digital printing allows publications to be produced quickly as and when required. There is no need for expensive storage - small runs can be produced inexpensively and publications shipped immediately after the order has been received.

Raster/dpi
Rasters (dots per inch) consist of rows of dots running at right-angles: raster lines. The raster width gives the number of raster lines per cm. A 60 raster, for example, has 60 lines per cm, so there are 3600 raster dots per cm2; see formats.

Finishing
This means work stages after printing, such as collating, folding, grooving or scoring, trimming and saddle stitching (stapling). Also known as postpress. It covers all operations of a printing process required to turn the printed sheets into a finished product. These operations include cutting, folding, stitching, binding and packaging.
